At Miss Nellie’s Restaurant and Bar, we believe that dining should be as exhilarating and transformative as the adventures of our namesake, the pioneering journalist Nellie Bly. Just as Bly broke barriers and ventured out on daring journeys, we invite you to embark on a culinary journey in a warm venue that combines the age of exploration and modern society.
Her Story
Nellie Bly, born Elizabeth Cochran Seaman on May 5, 1864, in Cochran's Mills, Pennsylvania, was a pioneering journalist whose audacious reporting and fearless spirit reshaped the landscape of investigative journalism. Her pen name, Nellie Bly, was inspired by the Stephen Foster song of the same name and is an emblem of her trailblazing career.
Bly's career in journalism began after a bold response to a local newspaper challenging societal norms led to her first reporting gig. Her compelling letter landed her a job at the Pittsburgh Dispatch when she was only 21. Armed with a tenacious curiosity and an unyielding resolve, she quickly made a name for herself with her groundbreaking exposés on issues like mental health care and labor laws.
In 1887, Nellie Bly embarked on a daring undercover investigation inside the Women's Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell's Island (now Roosevelt Island). Her vivid and searing accounts of the appalling conditions faced by patients not only exposed systemic abuses but also catalyzed reforms in mental health care. The series, published in the New York World, solidified her reputation as a fearless journalist committed to exposing the truth.
In 1889, she embarked on a globe-trotting challenge inspired by Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in Eighty Days. Against considerable odds, Bly completed the journey in just 72 days, 6 hours, and 11 minutes, capturing the public’s attention and cementing her place in history as a record-breaking adventurer.
Throughout her life, Bly was a vocal advocate for social justice, using her writing to highlight issues like labor rights, women's suffrage, and child labor. She continued to break barriers, later becoming one of the first women to cover the Western Front during World War I. Aside from her journalistic achievements, Bly also ran a manufacturing business and holds several patents for innovative designs.
Nellie Bly died on January 27, 1922, but her life’s work exemplifies the power of journalism to drive change and inspire progress. Today, Miss Nellie remains a symbol of courage, tenacity, and the relentless pursuit of truth.

This secluded front room is anchored by its own bar, creating the perfect basecamp for groups of 20-25. With plush lounge seating for 12 and an additional 5 bar stools, the ambiance feels both worldly and intimate, encouraging guests to lose themselves in the romance of exploration. Complete with A/V capabilities for your music or TV needs, this lounge is ideal for those seeking a snug yet vibrant spot that’s equal parts elegance and excitement.
The Map Room
For smaller, more intimate gatherings, The Map Room offers a charming escape into a world of refined comfort and a quiet reprieve from the bustle outside. Perfect for groups of up to 12, this cozy room with delicate parasols and low cocktail tables feels like a private hideaway, making it the ideal spot for deep conversations and spirited toasts.
Elixir Lounge
The spacious Elixir Lounge accommodates up to 65 guests with low, comfortable seating designed to spark conversation. A/V capabilities make it easy to set the perfect mood with music or presentations while guests enjoy Miss Nellie’s signature cocktails. The room’s warm amber lighting, ornate chandeliers, and eclectic décor evoke the charm of a secret apothecary, blending luxe with playful intrigue. Vintage maps, whimsical wall art, and subtle metallic accents create an atmosphere that feels both elevated and intimate—perfect for larger gatherings or celebratory events.
The Textile Room
Tucked away in the mezzanine, The Textile Room offers a more secluded, intimate setting for groups of up to 20. With vintage rugs suspended overhead like woven maps from faraway lands, this room feels like stepping into a bohemian adventurer’s den where the ceiling itself becomes a canvas for storytelling. In this cocoon of colors and textures, every glance upward is a reminder of life’s rich tapestry making it the perfect nook for smaller events that want to foster an atmosphere of connection.
